I never knew Ruthanne but through Diane and Lorraine I have followed the stages of her illness, her remarkable courage and the legacy she has left to all.Her life is an inspiration to me and I wish for her family a future of happiness/

During the year I've spent as a glaucoma fellow with her and RJS, Ruhtanne has changed from an admired tutor into a beloved friend. Much more than glaucoma, her braveness in fighting the desease and her wisdom in making the most out of the time she had left, have taught me lessons I'll take with me for the rest of my life.

Dearest Friends,

Ruthanne's strength and bravery during the past few years were an example to all of how to live life each day with dignity and grace. Hanging out at the Cape house reading about Clinton's exploits, walking (actually racing) along the aquaduct discussing Nick and Sam's exploits, watching fireworks set to music and marveling at the beauty, discussing gardening challenges in the face of death, Ruthanne approached every experience with determination and optimism. Her courage will never be forgotten and her inner beauty lives on in Nick and Laura. It was a privilege to know her.

We wish you strength and peace in the coming year. Please know that a homecooked meal is always just around the corner.

With love,

Rachel, Michael, Sam, Anna, Sarah and Jacob Miller

Bob,

Thank you very much for your email. My heart reaches
out to you and the children. I pray and hope that you
are coping well. I myself was taken aback by this
saddest of the sad news, and it took me a while to
recover and compose my thoughts. My whole family
grieves with you. I thought that being in the other
side of the Pacific would assuage the grief, but I was
wrong. I am one with you and Nick and Laura.

Being the most recent beneficiary of the legendary
generosity of the Simmons family makes me feel truly
blessed. Up to this day, I can't imagine how an
obscure eye doctor from the thirld world was plucked
out by Dr. Simmons and made to be her fellow. I can
only fall on my knees and praise and give thanks for
this wonderful opportunity, and always remember Dr.
Ruthanne in my prayers.

I have spent quite some time in your beautiful house
in Needham. My heart is heavy with grief imagining
this same house, without Ruthanne.

"Everything has a season, everything has its time..."
This is a line from the song your family sang last
Christmas in your house while you played the piano. I
still have that picture in our Boston album, and I
will forever treasure it. Indeed, everything has a
season...

My prayers are one with you, Laura and Nick and the
entire Simmons family this Thanksgiving season.

I hope to keep in close touch with all of you.

With warm regards from the Phillipines,

Sincerely,

Ernesto
