I came from Brazil in 2000 for a fellowship with Dr.Simmons, and I was kind of afraid of being alone in a different country. Even for only 6 months. As I started I found out the great doctor she was, but I was also mesmerized by the fantastic and caring friend Ruthanne became to me. Ruthanne and Bob, Nick and Laura received me in their house as part of their family, and I will be forever grateful for the unique opportunity to live among so much love. The 6 months became almost 3 years now, and as I go back to Brazil, I will take with me not only what I have learned from the doctor. Ruthanne's life will also inspire me at a personal level, profoundly. My thoughts and prayers will be always with you.

When I was diagnosed in January, 2001 with breast cancer, Ruthanne took me into her office at OCB. She became my friend. First we cried together, and then we just sat and talked for a long time. Ruthanne said she would be there for me anytime I ever needed her and I knew she meant that from her heart. She was a very special, caring person. I will miss you my friend. Bunny

As Ruthanne's massage therapist I have had the pleasure of spending an hour a week with Ruthanne for more than 5 years. We shared conversations about family, work, and of course Ruthanne's health. Very often we would laugh at the absurdities of life. Ruthanne was so generous and kind towards me. Just last week when everyone in the house was focused on her, she told me she loved my new haircut. I couldn't believe that with all that she was coping with she would notice my hair. But I shouldn't have been surprised. It was classic Ruthanne. I miss her already. To Bob, Nick, Laura, Dick, Anne and the rest of your family I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you will find comfort in the beauty of Ruthanne's life, the incredible strength you all showed her, and the unending love she has for all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Fayanne

My acquaintance with Ruthanne was short lived but fulfilling. She would visit our office, greeting everyone with her warm smile and friendly hello. I will take on my journey some of her strength and kindness. I would like to pass along a short story that seems to sum up everything I am feeling: I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then some one at my side says: "There! She's gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight-that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when some one at my side says, "There! She's gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout," There she comes!'

We are truly sorry to hear of Ruthanne's passing. Seeing her around the town and at school meetings has been inspirational. She was a strong and loving woman.
